What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

My major is International Business Management with a focus on Japan. During my stay in Japan, I would primarily like to learn Japanese and finish my exchange year by taking the JLPT N2 in December. I am also interested in the Japanese business world, especially in the field of logistics and working life and wish to learn about this during my year in Japan.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I am interested in meeting people who would like to explore the nature in the Tohoku region with me and who like to talk in coffee shops. I would also be very grateful if someone would be willing to give me an insight into Japanese working life and/or the logistical processes involved in trade fairs, exhibitions and other events.

Olivia PARCZYK(慶應義塾大学/Universität zu Köln、心理学、修士課程)

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

I am coming to Japan to write my thesis about how the pressure that comes from the education system affects students’ mental health. Ever since I did an exchange in South Korea, I have been very interested in East-Asian education systems, as they work quite differently than Western ones (such as the university entrance exam, after-school activities, etc.). Therefore, I am looking forward to find out more about the Japanese education system in-person.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

While I am of course interested in academic exchange, I am generally curious about the experiences Japanese people can share about their education and how they cope with pressure. Therefore, I am not specifically looking for people from my field of study. Furthermore: all my classes are online and I will not arrive in Japan until mid-May, which is why connecting to people will be quite difficult. Therefore, I am looking for any kind of informal exchange, e.g. in the form of activities!

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

My academic field is the global history of knowledge in the early modern period. Currently, I am working on production processes of ethnographic knowledge between Europe and Japan during Japan’s Nanban era (1549-1647). While in Japan, I want to work with as much archival material from the Nanban era as possible.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I am interested in connecting with other scholars in the field of early modern Japanese history and/or early modern knowledge history. I am also interested in meeting people to do cultural activities together.

Linda HUKE(多摩美術大学/University of the Arts Berlin、建築・美術史、修士課程)

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

I completed my graduate studies in Art History in Berlin in 2018. My main focus was the interconnection of politics and the built environment. My Master Thesis was on the grave site of Yassir Arafat in the Westbank and how the structure and the aesthetics of its buildings are related to Palestinian identity politics and to the violent conflicts in the Middle East. In 2019, following my urgent wish to work rather practically than theoretically, I started another undergraduate degree in Architecture, which I will complete in 2023. I am still interested in representative as well as vernacular architecture and its relation to beliefs, customs and aesthetic history. In Japan, I am mainly interested in the concepts of “beauty” and “non-violence.” I want to explore how these are part of Japanese architectural traditions. In the light of the climate crisis, I am also very interested in the practical aspects of Japanese architecture in relation to concepts of sustainability – traditional wood architecture, bamboo as a building material, 焼杉 etc.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I am extremely interested in any theoretical or practical exchange in relation to architecture in Japan. I would be happy to participate in any kind of excursions, talks, or small research projects. I can help with model-making, visualizations, writing, copy-editing and translations (English, French, Spanish, German). In addition, I am looking for an internship in an architecture office from September to November anywhere in Japan (3 months).

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

I am enrolled in a double degree program and currently working at the Keio Quantum Computing Center on fundamental proofs to ensure quantum advantage for machine learning tasks. However, my master studies at RWTH Aachen were more focused on micro- and nanoelectronics (including photonics), which I am also very enthusiastic about.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I would be happy to meet other people with similar academic backgrounds or areas of interest. I am also looking for an internship starting in April 2023 and would appreciate suggestions there as well! If anyone enjoys hiking in the Tokyo area, please feel free to contact me too.

Jannis SCHULZ-RENNOCK(上智大学/Universität Greifswald、政治学・国際関係学、修士課程)

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

This is already my second year of studying abroad in Japan and at Sophia University. During my first stay as an exchange student, I was able to develop my own academic focus – Japan in International Relations, with a focus on Japan’s foreign and security policy. In connection to the theories of international relations I also wrote my bachelor thesis about that focus.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I am 29 years old, and I already used to work as a professional in public administration for several years before I decided to study at a university in Germany. For this reason, I am not entirely sure about my future life after my master’s degree. I can imagine applying for a (higher) position in public service (with a focus on international relations), but also doing a PhD, as some of my German/Japanese professors are really supportive about that opportunity. I am very open minded and like to exchange ideas with others, and would be grateful for any kind of exchange – be it academic (Japan in International Relations/master thesis), professional (working life in Germany/Japan) or for hobby activities (I love hiking in Japan, and Japanese culture, may it be history, customs or traditions, I also find interesting.) Since I am in the final phase of my studies, I am also relatively flexible and would not mind traveling to other Japanese cities for an exchange meeting.

Leannán O'GRADY(早稲田大学/Universität zu Köln、日本学・ 哲学、修士課程)

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

During my year abroad, one of my main goals is to take advantage of Waseda University’s wide range of courses to further my education in areas relevant to my studies. This includes the Japanese language courses, but also different classes linked to my fields of interest, which in particular relate to cultural studies, politics, gender studies and religion. In the context of my master’s thesis, it is also my intention to implement a research project that thematically deals with contemporary developments of Buddhism in Japan, especially socially engaged Buddhism. I currently invest my free time in everything political, and I am particularly passionate about international relations, diplomacy, international law, and global developments.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I am open to a variety of things, but would be very happy to have exchange opportunities in my fields of interests.

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

I’m interested in social practices and local governance measures for waste prevention, reuse, and recycling. While in Japan, I’m planning to visit the Zero Waste Town Kamikatsu (Tokushima-ken) to understand their living habits and infrastructural organization related to consumption and waste. But also other villages, towns, and cities with creative anti-waste approaches are valuable to me – if you have any recommendations, please feel free to write me!

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I’m always open for connecting with new people! I’d be happy about academic exchange with scholars working on related topics, but also about having a cup of tea or visiting a museum etc. with someone in the area.

What are your academic or other professional interests? What are you trying to accomplish while in Japan?

From a professional perspective I want to develop myself more in the DataVIz Area and maybe go into Data Journalism to create the data visualization for newspaper organization as I find the data about social issues, environmental problems etc. more interesting than a company’s financial data. I hope to use this year to learn more coding and create my own portfolio website. While in Japan, I am trying to reach N2 by the end of this year so that I can explore my career options hopefully in Japan more.

What kind of exchange are you interested in?

I am interested in connecting with people that also share an interest in the data field but it is not a must. In general, I am always happy to get to know people. Especially if you are from the Kyushu area, I am also open to meet up in person if interested.
