DAAD Project Funding

© DAAD/Laura Blecken
The DAAD promotes cooperation projects between German and international universities with various programs. Many of these can be used for joint research projects between German and Japanese universities.

In principle, only the German side (Higher Education Institutions in Germany) can apply for the DAAD project funding. Some programs, such as PPP Joint Research, are matched by a funding from a Japanese institution.

Program Summary
PPP Joint Research (project-related exchange of people), including Partnership programs with JSPS, the universities of Waseda, Tsukuba, Kyoto and NINS
Programm des Projektbezogenen Personenaustauschs (mit verschiedenen Ländern)
The program aims to initiate or strengthen binational research partnerships between German and foreign universities or research institutions, emphasizing the qualification of young academics. It supports the mobility and short-term stays of project participants, especially young researchers, for research activities in all disciplines.

Please note: There are 5 different PPP program types for Japan depending on the Japanese partner institution, as explained in the document “Anlage 1: Länderspezifische Bedingungen – Ausschreibung 06/24”

Please note: For applications from the Japanese side, see the websites of the respective Japanese partner organisations and universities (for JSPS, please visit this page)

PAJAKO – Partnerships with Japan and/or Korea
PAJAKO – Partnerschaften mit Japan und Korea
The program aims to strengthen existing and initiate new bi- or trilateral scientific partnerships with Japan and Korea through partnership agreements between German institutions and their Japanese and/or Korean counterparts, with a focus on the qualification of young academics. It supports research, study, and teaching stays in Germany and the partner countries (Japan and/or Korea).
International Study and Training Partnerships (ISAP)
ISAP – Internationale Studien- und Ausbildungspartnerschaften
The aim of the program is to establish long-term cooperation between foreign and German universities through bilateral student and lecturer exchanges and thus to establish and expand international structures at the German university. The program supports the mobility and stay of students and teaching staff, support measures, work meetings, preparatory courses in Germany and alumni measures.
Joint/Double Degree Programs
Integrierte internationale Studiengänge mit Doppelabschluss
The aim is to develop and implement international degree programs with joint curricula of the German and the foreign university(ies) for groups of highly qualified German and foreign students who study alternately at the German and the foreign partner university(ies) and obtain both national degrees (joint degree or double degree).
Program to increase the Mobility of Students from German Universities (PROMOS)
PROMOS – Programm zur Steigerung der Mobilität von Studierenden deutscher Hochschulen
The aim is to promote the mobility of students at German universities and to advance the internationalization strategies of the participating institutions. Study and internships of up to six months by students enrolled at German universities, language training and specialization courses, trips for training and competitions, as well as support for scholars and promotion of the program are supported.
Germanistische Institutspartnerschaften weltweit This program provides grants for departments of German Studies within Germany and associated partner institutes abroad. Funding includes the development of new teaching concepts & curricula, study abroad, academic research and guest lectureships related to German Studies.
Study Visits for Groups of Foreign Students in Germany
Studienreisen für Gruppen ausländischer Studierender in Deutschland
This funding is available for study visits to at least two German universities for up to 15 foreign students accompanied by a university lecturer for a maximum of 12 days. The groups consist of foreign students from the 2nd semester onwards, registered graduates, (in exceptional cases) doctoral students and an accompanying university lecturer. Foreign universities are eligible to apply.
RISE Worldwide The programme enables institutions or research groups outside Germany (including Japan) to host undergraduate students of scientific disciplines from German universities as research interns for a period of 6 weeks to 3 months during the summer months. Applications may be submitted by professors, postdocs, PhD students or researchers in scientific disciplines outside Germany (including Japan) who are employed by or affiliated with an accredited academic institution or a non-profit research institution.
