Der deutsch-japanische Austausch

In Japan hat der akademische Austausch mit Deutschland eine lange Geschichte. Die DAAD-Außenstelle Tokyo wurde 1978 gegründet. Durch die Förderung von japanischen Studierenden in Deutschland nahm der DAAD jedoch schon Jahre zuvor eine wichtige Rolle ein.

Nach seiner Gründung im Jahr 1925 förderte der deutsche akademische Austauschdienst bereits vor Ausbruch der 2. Weltkriegs 18 deutsche Stipendiaten in Japan und 36 japanische Stipendiaten in Deutschland. Der erste DAAD-Stipendiat aus Japan war der weltberühmte Maler Kaii Higashiyama, der 1933-1935 Kunstgeschichte in Berlin studierte. Die erste Gruppe japanischer DAAD-Jahresstipendiaten nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs traf im Jahr 1952 in Deutschland ein. Unter ihnen befand sich der Medizin-Professor Hisashi Yoshida, später Gründungspräsident der Vereinigung der Freunde des DAAD in Japan (DAAD Tomonokai).

Die Außenstelle Tokyo des DAAD besteht seit 1978. Sie versteht sich vor allem als Vermittlerin von Informationen – an Japaner über den Studien- und Forschungsstandort Deutschland, aber auch an deutsche Institutionen und Einzelpersonen über die Wissenschaftslandschaft Japans. Kernstück der Arbeit des DAAD ist neben dem Informations- und Beratungsangebot bis heute die Vergabe von Stipendien und Fördermitteln an Studierende und Wissenschaftler. Dafür steht heute ein breites Stipendienangebot zur Verfügung.

Besonders hervorzuheben für deutsche Bewerber ist das 1984 vom DAAD ins Leben gerufene Programm Sprache und Praxis in Japan. Die 15-monatigen Stipendien kombinieren intensiven Sprachunterricht mit Praktika in japanischen Unternehmen. Viele der über 400 Absolventen des Programms nehmen heute wichtige Positionen in japanischen, deutschen oder europäischen Firmen ein.

Im Oktober 2000 beteiligte sich der DAAD an der Gründung des Zentrums für Deutschland- und Europastudien (DESK) auf dem Komaba Campus der Tokyo Universität. Auch die Gründung der heute viel genutzten “Koordinationsstelle für Praktika” (KOPRA) mit Ostasienbezug, unterstützte der DAAD.

Intensive Kontakte pflegt die Außenstelle zu den Vertretern deutschlandbezogener Studiengänge an japanischen Universitäten ebenso wie zu den germanistischen Vereinigungen. In diesem Rahmen werden über 200 deutsche bzw. deutschsprachige Hochschullehrer in Japan durch regelmäßige Informations- und Fachveranstaltungen der Außenstelle betreut.

Auch zu seinen ehemaligen Stipendiaten hält der DAAD eine enge Verbindung. Die 1985 gegründete Alumni-Vereinigung DAAD Tomo no kai hat heute über 900 Mitglieder. Die Alumni können bei den regelmäßigen Treffen in und außerhalb von Tokyo ihren Kontakt untereinander und ihre Verbindung zu Deutschland pflegen.
